About
My name is Jason Jones. I am the CTO of Applied OLAP, a software company that has been making Essbase better for a very long time, and I love technology: building it, taking it apart, and making it useful to the people who depend on it.
At Applied OLAP I work on the Dodeca Spreadsheet Management System, Drillbridge, which I created and Applied OLAP acquired in 2016, and the venerable Essbase Outline Extractor. I also help maintain essbase-rest-client, our open source Java library for the Essbase REST API. Before Applied OLAP I was at Kroger, where I helped roll out one of the earliest Dodeca implementations, and then Symetra. After that I spent several years consulting, with AdvancedEPM, through my own company, Saxifrage Systems, and with Key Performance Ideas.
My background is hands-on: Essbase development and administration, performance tuning, automation, drill-through, the Essbase Java and REST APIs, Java, SQL, Python, and the servers and scripts that hold it all together. I have been writing about all of it here since 2007, and presenting on it at Kscope.
This site was called jason’s hyperion blog until 2026. The name changed; the posts did not. Every link still works.
Outside of work I publish a fair amount of open source on GitHub, including Essterm for Essbase ad hoc in a terminal and PBJ, a Java library for the PBCS and EPM Cloud REST API that has been in development for over a decade and is, in my entirely unbiased opinion, the best one there is. I also make time for some other hobbies.
